Pay for a membership plan

For Students and families

In short

When your dojo takes payments online, the Membership card on My Dashboard lists its plans. Press Set up payment, check the amount, and press Continue to payment to pay on Stripe's secure checkout. You pay your dojo directly: KarateShowCase adds no fee and never sees your card.

Setting up a plan

  1. On My Dashboard, find the Membership card.
  2. Press Set up payment on the plan.
  3. Check the amount and press Continue to payment. You pay on Stripe's own page.

The payment goes to your dojo's own account; your dojo sets its prices. A linked parent or guardian, or the student on their own record, sets up payment; your dojo's administrators can also set it up at the front desk.

If your dojo hasn't finished setting up online payments, the card lists its plans without a button and says "Online sign-up isn't open at this dojo yet", and a fee you owe says "Pay this at the dojo". Ask your dojo how to join or pay in the meantime.

Changing your card

The person who pays for a plan can change the card it is charged to:

  1. On My Dashboard, find the Membership card.
  2. Press Update card. If any plan of yours has an overdue payment, the card names it first, and says whether Stripe will try it on the new card; press Continue to update card when you have read it.
  3. Save the new card on Stripe's own page. You come back to My Dashboard, and the card says "Your new card is saved for this plan."

The new card is used for every plan you pay for at that dojo. It is saved on your dojo's own Stripe account, and KarateShowCase never sees it. If someone else in your family pays for the plan, they change its card from their own account.

If a payment fails

The person who pays is told "A membership payment needs your attention" in the app, and by email too when their account's email address is confirmed and the dojo sends automated email. The email goes once for each payment, to that person's own address, and not if the payment has been made by the time it would be sent. The Membership card says the payment did not go through, with the amount Stripe says is overdue. Nothing about the athlete's training, belt or records changes. The card offers two choices:

  • Save card & pay saves a new card on Stripe's own page and, when you come back to My Dashboard, pays the overdue amount on the button with it, and nothing else.
  • Save card only saves the new card and charges nothing then. If Stripe has a retry scheduled for the overdue payment, it may try it on the new card automatically, and the card names the date when Stripe has set one. If Stripe has no retry scheduled — after your bank asked you to confirm a payment, or once its retries are used up — saving a new card does not bring one back: the card says the payment will not be tried again automatically, and you can pay it there.

If the payment is waiting on your bank — Stripe tried the renewal and your bank wants you to confirm it — the card says "Your bank needs you to confirm this payment" instead. Its first choice is Pay with the card already on file (the button names the amount and the card's last four digits), with "Your bank may ask you to confirm it." under it: if your bank asks, the card then offers Confirm with your bank; if it does not, the payment is made on the press. Save card & pay is beside it if you would rather use another card. Stripe does not try a payment waiting on your bank again by itself.

The new card is used for every plan you pay for at that dojo, so the card also names any other plan of yours with an overdue payment, and whether Stripe will try it on the new card. When you come back, the card says whether your card was saved and, separately, whether the payment was received; if the plan has another overdue payment, the card offers it next. If your bank wants you to confirm the payment, press Confirm with your bank and finish on Stripe's page, which opens in a new tab. Until you confirm, that payment is not tried again automatically.

If your new card is saved but the payment was not made, the card offers Pay with your saved card, so you never enter it again. If Stripe has stopped trying, the card says so: pay it there, or ask your dojo to collect the missed payment.

Receipts

Whether Stripe emails you a receipt depends on your dojo's own Stripe settings. For a receipt, or anything else about a charge, ask your dojo: it is the seller.
