Your belt ladder and requirements

For Dojo owners and administrators, Coaches

In short

Your belt ladder is the list of ranks your dojo awards, in order. Set it up in the admin console under Progress, then Belt ladder: add each rank, put them in order and press Save Ladder. Under Belt Requirements, pick a rank and add what it takes — kata, kumite and other sections, videos and documents, and minimum months or classes.

Where to find it: Admin console → Progress → Belt ladder

The ladder

  1. Open Admin console → Progress → Belt ladder.
  2. Type a rank (for example "White", "8th Kyu" or "Shodan") and press Add. Use the arrows to put them in order, and rename a rank where it is.
  3. Press Save Ladder. This is the ladder promotions are recorded against.

There is no default ladder: a dojo starts with its own. A ladder holds up to 40 ranks. Removing a rank asks first; nothing changes until you save, and a rank removed and added again is a new rank.

Requirements

Under Belt Requirements, pick a rank and add sections — Kata, Kumite, Kata Bunkai, Self Defense, Basics, Terminology and others — with YouTube videos, links or uploaded PDFs and images. Testing sets the minimum months in rank and minimum classes, and a note for the member. Start from another rank… copies one rank's requirements as a start. Press Save requirements: nothing reaches your students until you do.

Students see what their next rank requires in Training & Progress on My Dashboard.

Recording a rank

Open the athlete's profile, then Profile, and use its Rank section to choose what kind of change it is:

  • A grading — they earned it — with Record promotion.
  • A rank they already held, when they came from another school, with where they held it.
  • A correction, when the rank on record was wrong, with why.

A belt test's results record gradings for you; see Run a belt test. An entry made by mistake is marked Recorded in error with a reason: entries are never deleted one by one, though deleting the athlete's record removes their rank history with it.
